SADAQAH

    Sadaqah key terms explained

    Definition:

Sadaqah refers to voluntary charitable giving in Islam. It is highly encouraged to earn spiritual rewards and help the needy. Sadaqah can take various forms, including monetary donations, giving goods, or performing acts of kindness.

There are some instances in which Sadaqah is compulsory and there are specified amounts of charity to be given. This type of Sadaqah is classed as Sadaqah Wajibah.

    Types of Voluntary Sadaqah:

    • General Sadaqah   –  Voluntary charitable contribution given to benefit others and to gain reward for oneself.
    • Sadaqah Jariyah   –  Continuous acts of charity for which the donor will continue to gain reward for as long as the charitable act continues to benefit others. For example, planting trees, building schools, digging well and more. Sadaqah Jariyah is considered the best form of charity to give on behalf of a deceased relative or friend.

    Types of Sadaqah Wajibah:

    • Sadaqatul Fitr   –  It is also sometimes referred to as ‘Zakat al Fitr’. It is compulsory upon every sane Muslim with enough wealth above their basic needs. Fathers should give it on behalf of their children. The amount to be given is equivalent to 1 sa’ of dates or barley. Sadaqatul Fitr is given at the end of Ramadhan, before Eid salah.
    • Fidyah   –  Charity given as compensation for those who are not able to fast, complete salah or for minor mistakes during Hajj. The amount to be given depends on how much salah, fasts, or mistakes are made.
    • Kaffarah   –  Compensation given for intentionally missing or breaking fast, major mistakes in Hajj and violating other Islamic laws. The amount given depends on the violation. For further information about Kaffarah consult a trusted scholar.
